OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, has announced her departure from the company after more than six years of service. In a post shared on X, Murati expressed that she has made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI, citing a desire to create time and space for her own exploration. She acknowledged the challenge of timing, stating that there is never a perfect time to leave a place she cares about, but that the moment feels right.

Murati has been instrumental in OpenAI’s progress and growth, particularly in the development of ChatGPT. Her contributions have been significant, transforming the company from an unknown research lab to an important entity in the AI industry. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised Murati’s leadership and the progress she has achieved, noting that she has developed a strong leadership team to continue the company’s advancement.

The departure of Murati comes just a few weeks before OpenAI’s annual developer conference, Dev Day. The company will hold a company-wide meeting on September 27 to address the transition and ensure a smooth handover to the next generation of leadership. Murati’s main priority during her remaining time at the company will be to facilitate this transition and uphold the progress the team has achieved.

This departure adds to a trend of recent high-profile exits from OpenAI. In May, founder I Sutsver and safety leader Jan Leike revealed their exits, while co-founder John Schulman announced his move to the competitor Anthropic last month. The restructuring of OpenAI, including its transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit benefit corporation, is also underway, aiming to make the company more attractive to outside investors. However, this move has raised concerns about accountability in the pursuit of superintelligent AI.
