Major record companies globally are taking legal action against AI music platforms Suno and Udio for allegedly breaching copyright laws by using music from renowned artists in their AI-generated songs. The lawsuits, announced by the Recording Industry Association of America, involve labels like Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group Recordings, and Warner Records.

The legal proceedings target Suno AI in Boston and Uncharted Labs, the creator of Udio AI, in New York, with claims that these platforms unlawfully extract music to produce similar compositions, demanding $150,000 per piece in compensation. Suno, in collaboration with Microsoft, operates on a subscription basis, while Udio gained attention when producer Metro Boomin utilized it to create a viral track.

Despite assertions from Suno AI’s CEO that their technology is meant for original creations and prohibits direct artist references, the RIAA’s chairman criticized these AI services for exploiting artists’ work without authorization. Concerns over AI’s impact on the music industry have prompted legislative actions like Tennessee’s law safeguarding music professionals from potential AI risks. Additionally, the Artist Rights Alliance has mobilized over 200 artists to advocate against AI infringement on human artists’ rights.
