Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company will begin testing user-created AI chatbots on Instagram through its Meta AI Studio. This initiative, starting in the U.S., coincides with Character.ai, which allows users to interact with AI avatars via calls.

Zuckerberg emphasized that these AI chatbots will be distinctly labeled to ensure user awareness. He mentioned, “We’re launching a preliminary trial in the U.S. of our AI studio, so expect to encounter AIs from your creators and interest AIs on soon, primarily within messaging, clearly identified as AI.”

The CEO highlighted collaborations with creators like Wasted meme account and tech innovator Don Allen Stevenson III to introduce early versions of user-generated chatbots. These AI chatbots are expected to help creators with tasks such as answering questions from their fans, as they may not have enough time to respond to every inquiry.

Zuckerberg stressed the need for diverse APIs to cater to various interests, aiming to empower creators and eventually small businesses to engage with their communities and customers through AI. He acknowledged that AI avatars are still evolving and require experimentation to determine engaging and trustworthy interaction models.

Meta plans to pilot the feature with 50 creators and a limited user base initially, with gradual expansion in the following months, targeting a full launch by August. The company had introduced its AI studio at a previous developer conference to facilitate custom chatbot development.
