Google has introduced a new feature for Gmail users on iOS, allowing them to interact with the Gemini chatbot directly within the app. This feature, known as Gmail Q&A, was first rolled out to Android users in August and is now available to Google One AI Premium subscribers or those with Google Workspace accounts that include the Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons.

With Gmail Q&A, users can ask specific questions about their emails, such as “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?” or “Catch me up on the emails about quarterly planning.” The chatbot can also help summarize emails about a particular topic and show unread messages from a specific sender. Initially, the feature will only be able to find information from the user’s inbox, but Google plans to expand its capabilities to include information from Google Drive in the future.

The addition of the Gemini button next to the search bar aims to encourage users to leverage AI for finding specific information within their emails, rather than relying solely on traditional search methods. This move is part of Google’s strategy to enhance its email service and make it more competitive, particularly following Apple’s introduction of several Gmail-like features in its Mail app with iOS 18.

The feature is unlikely to be available to free Gmail users anytime soon, as Google is marketing these advanced features to convince people to sign up for its monthly subscriptions. This expansion of AI capabilities in Gmail is part of a broader trend by tech companies to integrate AI into their existing products, including Google Docs, Google Calendar, and more.
