Figma, a leading collaborative design tool, has announced the relaunch of its AI-powered app generator, previously known as Make Designs, under the new name First Draft. This feature was initially introduced in June to assist designers in leveraging generative AI for initiating app designs. However, it was temporarily pulled from the platform for further evaluation despite Figma’s assurances that it was not trained on user data, utilizing pre-existing generative AI models instead.

The feature is now set to return in a limited beta phase, incorporating several enhancements. Users will have the option to select from four distinct libraries tailored to various design requirements. These libraries include wireframing libraries for creating basic, low-fidelity designs and higher-fidelity libraries for richer visual representations and patterns. This provides a more flexible, exploratory alternative to Figma’s Visual Search function, which enables users to search through their Figma files using prompts or images to locate existing files or components.

In its blog announcement regarding the feature’s comeback, Figma elaborated on how First Draft operates. The tool does not utilize customer-generated content for training and relies on pre-existing AI models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Amazon Titan. It incorporates three fundamental components: a model, a component, and an assembly. The system includes proprietary design systems for mobile and desktop platforms, complete with numerous components and assembly examples. Users specify their design objectives as prompts, and the AI then selects, organizes, and customizes components from the design system based on these inputs, generating an initial design framework.

Figma stated that the feature has been relaunched following thorough analysis, revisions, and testing. This move is aimed at providing designers with a more efficient and innovative way to initiate their design projects, leveraging the power of AI to streamline the creative process.
