OpenAI has officially launched its ChatGPT desktop app for macOS users, making it easily accessible through a keyboard shortcut. The app’s availability was announced on Tuesday, following its initial mention before Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June. At WWDC, OpenAI and Apple jointly revealed the integration of ChatGPT with Apple’s operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Mac users can now launch ChatGPT by pressing Option + Space after installing the new app. This shortcut mirrors the familiarity of using Command + Space for Spotlight Search. Instead of a standard search function, users will now have instant access to a vast realm of knowledge with ChatGPT’s chat interface appearing on the screen.

The launch of the macOS app coincided with the introduction of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s advanced generative AI model capable of handling text, speech, and video. The ‘o’ in GPT-4o denotes its multimodal capabilities, allowing it to comprehend various media formats.

Initially available to Plus subscribers, the ChatGPT desktop app has now been released to all Mac users. The app enables users to engage in conversations, share screenshots, upload files, and access past discussions directly from their desktop.

Beyond Mac devices, OpenAI and Apple have expanded their collaboration, with plans to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones and iPads. This broader integration, powered by GPT-4o, will extend to various Apple services, including Siri and Writing Tools, coinciding with the launch of Apple’s latest operating systems later this year.
