Canva, the popular web design platform, has unveiled a new text-to-image generator as part of its latest AI updates. This new feature leverages the technology from Leonardo.ai, which Canva acquired in July 2024. The text-to-image generator, dubbed “Dream Lab,” allows users to input text prompts and generate realistic images in real-time. The tool is based on Leonardo.ai’s Phoenix model and can produce images in various styles, including 3D render and illustration.

The Dream Lab is an improvement over Canva’s existing AI image generators, such as the Stable Diffusion-based tool. It offers better performance in creating images with photo-realistic styles and multiple subject matter, and it also allows users to reference existing images to control the output more effectively. The Verge noted that the new feature resembles Photoshop’s reference image tool.

In addition to the text-to-image generator, Canva has also enhanced its Magic Write feature, which now includes higher accuracy in text generation and a one-click command completion option. The platform’s whiteboard feature has been updated with AI-driven summarization capabilities and real-time reaction stickers. Furthermore, Canva has partnered with Artlist to offer royalty-free music and video assets.

Other upcoming features include caption customization to reflect brand personality, voting and quiz tools, and the ability to generate mockup templates from any image. Canva’s CEO, Melanie Perkins, expressed her excitement about the platform’s ability to empower over 200 million users worldwide with these new AI capabilities.
