Apple and Meta had discussions about integrating Meta’s Llama AI chatbot into iPhones, but the partnership may not materialize due to concerns over Meta’s privacy practices. According to sources, the talks between the two companies took place in March but did not progress to a formal stage. Apple’s decision to not onboard Meta was influenced by concerns that the company’s privacy practices are not stringent enough for its standards. Additionally, Apple believes that partnering with Meta would not enhance its own image.

Apple has a history of strained relations with Meta, dating back to 2011 when Apple restricted Facebook’s ability to integrate its own apps within the Facebook app. The tension escalated when Apple introduced privacy changes that allowed users to opt out of app tracking, significantly impacting Meta’s revenue from targeted advertising.

Despite rejecting Meta’s proposal, Apple continues to explore partnerships with other AI companies. The company has already integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri and is in talks with AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity about potentially adding their chatbots to Apple’s ecosystem. Apple is also reportedly in discussions with Google about integrating its Gemini AI model. The company’s strategy is to offer users a range of AI options, reflecting its commitment to providing diverse AI experiences.
